FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Kelsey and Natasha started this business after being selected by Dana Obleman to train with Sleep Sense. This included an extensive certification program in Sarasota, Florida, followed by a 3 month mentorship with Dana, herself.

West Coast Sleep Consulting has since grown to be a team of Social Workers and Clinical Counsellors who have all worked with a variety of ages of children in many different capacities. We all have one thing in common though - our passion for maternal mental health and our experience with motherhood and sleep deprivation!

  • We believe that teaching your little one to sleep is NOT one-size fits all! There are many different methods of sleep training and we will find the one that suites your little one best (and mom and dad’s comfort level too!). A great way to determine which method would work best for your family is to book a FREE 15 minute phone consultation where we can gather some information about your little one and what you have tried already -- then decide together which route to take.

  • Simply put - yes. Changes to anyone’s sleep routines will result in a bit of protest (even for adults!) So most likely there will be some crying as that is the only way our little ones can communicate their frustrations. What we can promise you is that we will not ask you to leave your little one alone to cry; we will not ask you to ignore to their cries; and we will encourage you to comfort them during the entire process.

We will also work with you to read your little one’s sleepy cues, adjust their awake times as needed and solidify a consistent and predictable schedule -- all in which will minimize your little one’s protesting. Once your little one starts to learn how to fall asleep independently (which is usually pretty quickly!) the crying will be a thing of the past and you will have taught your little one an important skill that they will have for life!

  • No. A pacifier is a sleep prop at its finest! They work great for newborns to help soothe so mom’s boob doesn’t become a human pacifier but once a baby becomes reliant on their pacifier to sleep, it usually means that mommy or daddy need to be of rescue each time they wake up in the night and need help to find it and get it back in their mouth. Even if your little one can find it themselves and put it back in themselves, each wakeup to do so will bring your little one out of their deep sleep and therefore cause fragmented sleep throughout the night.

  • Of course you can! For as long as you want! Breastfeeding is great for babies in so many ways and we would never suggest that you stop.

  • Yes - absolutely! As long as we have the go-ahead from your doctor and your little one has their condition under control, we would love to work to help establish some healthy sleep habits for your little one!

  • Lightly put - no. Co-sleeping is so great in many ways, we have both done it at some point or another, but in order to teach your little one how to self soothe, we recommend that they sleep in their own bed. If co-sleeping is important to you and your family - rock on! When you are ready to make the transition, we will be here to help you every step of the way!

  • Yes! While co-sleeping is a no, room sharing is totally doable. We can still improve your little one’s sleep habits even if you share a room! It can be a little trickier, but if it is the only option then we can totally make it work!

  • Of course you can. We may recommend you split them up for the first 1-2 weeks (if possible) to make things move along quicker. We could even teach them BOTH how to sleep through the night if that’s the case - we may as well have everyone on the same page! Check out our packages for multiples if this may be of interest to you.
